Overview    Tips

Visitors can discover the diversity of Colorado’s earliest inhabitants and glorious past at the Colorado History Museum. Colorado was once a land traversed by covered wagons and home to fur trappers, Indians and miners. The Wild Wild West virtually comes to life while gazing at the historic photographs and rare artifacts.

The Colorado Historical Society has over 130,000 artifacts, 450,000 photographs and 15 million documents. Of course not all of these items will be on display, but the enormity of the figures is staggering nonetheless.

Many time periods and the variety of inhabitants are well documented, from Anasazi cultures and Native American tribes like the Sioux, Navajo and Apache to frontiersmen and pioneers such as Buffalo Bill and Kit Carson. It was a time in the West that captures the imagination of many people.

The Denver Diorama is the History Museum’s most famous attraction. The exhibit takes you back in time and provides you with an authentic feel for life in Denver during the 1860s. Plan on about two hours to see everything the museum has to offer. The gift store sells books, photos and many other souvenirs and a variety of events and temporary exhibits are planned throughout the year.
