Overview    Tips

The Denver Performing Arts complex is truly an awesome sight and has helped Denver gain recognition as one of the premier cultural centers in the nation. With a mix of historic buildings and some new art deco designs, it is a celebration of past, present and future. The complex covers four city blocks of downtown, with 9200 seats spread throughout eight uniquely different theatres.

Back in the days of the Wild Wild West, Denver had a theatre that routinely sold out before it had a school or a hospital. Today, the PLEX, as its known, is second in capacity to only the Lincoln Center in New York City for theatre performances. The venues include the Auditorium Theatre, the Temple Hoyne Buell Theatre, Beottcher Concert Hall, Garner Galleria Theatre and Helen Bonfils Theatre Complex, presenting symphony, opera, theatre and dance performances.

All of the theatres are connected by a spectacular 80-foot high clear glass arch, producing an open-air feeling as you stroll through the complex. Several sculptures and some intriguing architecture accentuate the brick and stone walkways. The PLEX also has a couple of restaurants and a few shops that sell theatre books and souvenirs.

The Buell Theatre is the largest of the group, with seating for 3000 guests. It hosts Opera Colorado and the Colorado Ballet, as well as top-notch, touring Broadway shows.

The Denver Center Theatre Company is the largest between Chicago and the West coast and won the 1998 Tony Award for outstanding regional theatre. The theatre company plays in the four theatres located in the Helen Bonfils Theatre Complex.

Valet service is offered at the main entrance on 14th Street and there are many parking garages within a block or two.
