Overview    Tips

Ten years ago, Lower Downtown was virtually a ghost town within a big city. Abandoned warehouses and unsavory characters contributed to an ambience that forced people elsewhere once the sun went down.

Today, LoDo, as it’s affectionately called, is a huge success. It has been transformed into a 26 square block entertainment district with over 90 brew pubs, restaurants and sports bars, 31 art galleries and an eclectic assortment of shops and boutiques.
LoDo is anchored by Coors Field, home to the Colorado Rockies and impetus for much of the neighborhood’s revitalization. Also located in LoDo is the Pepsi Center, home to the Colorado Avalanche and the perennially underachieving Denver Nuggets. The support the Nuggets continue to receive despite a decade and a half of lackluster seasons is a true testament to the loyalty that the Denver fans shower upon their sports teams.

Coors Field is a sublime structure, built with the grandeur of old-time baseball parks in mind and magnificent for viewing our nation’s pastime. Sammy Sosa and Mark McGuire routinely come to town and demonstrate how quickly a baseball can cut through the thin air of Denver. The ballpark holds the top 11 attendance records for Major League Baseball, which is ironic since the city spent a lot of energy convincing MLB that the city would be able to support a team.

The Pepsi Center was unveiled in October 1999 as a state of the art sporting facility with over 20,000 seats, all with spectacular views and ultimate comfort. Since obtaining the Colorado Avalanche in 1995, Denver has become one of only 10 American cities to have all four major league sports teams. It was also recently name the best sports city in the country by “The Sporting News” magazine.

You can spend an entire day shopping in LoDo and a whole evening inventing your own personal pub-crawl. There are shops, bars and restaurants for every budget and taste, all located in the most historic section of the city.

LoDo walking tours are available every Saturday morning from 10am – noon and begin at the corner of 16th and Market streets. Call ahead to reserve a spot.
