Overview    Tips

Denver is chock full of small music venues, but if you're looking for something on a grander scale, Red Rocks Amphitheater is hard to beat. Carved into the side of a huge rock formation, the medium sized venue is an impressive sight… but most people come for the sound.

The amphitheater is set in Red Rocks Mountain Park 20 minutes west of downtown. The sandstone ledges and amazing acoustics provide a musical experience not to be forgotten. From the Beatles to the Grateful Dead, local fans have been entertained by the heavy weights of the music industry for several decades. Due to the superior sound created by the amphitheater, many bands have recorded live albums there under the Colorado sky. One of the most famous of which is “Under a Blood Red Sky” by U2.

Even f you’re not in the mood for a concert, the park still makes for a great diversion. The unique rock formations provide scenic splendors that you will not find elsewhere in Colorado. There are guided, self-guided or audio tours available everyday as well as plenty of trills you can follow on your own.

Dinosaur Ridge is a nearby attraction that should not be missed. It is a one-mile stretch of exposed fossils still in the ground just as they were found. This outdoor museum and the surrounding landmarks provide a fantastic glimpse into the past and can be dated back to prehistoric times. It is a rare opportunity to be standing in a place with that much historical significance.

There are no food concessions in the park, so bring a picnic lunch and lots of water. If you decide to take in a concert, you will catch some great music in a magical setting and maybe even see a shooting star or two.
