One of the most visited attractions in Colorado is two hours southwest of Denver. The Royal Gorge Bridge and Park will undoubtedly test even those not afflicted by a fear of heights. Hanging at 1053 eye-popping feet above the mighty Arkansas River, the Royal Gorge Bridge is the highest suspension bridge in the world. It is 1260 feet in length and a slim 18 feet wide.
At 1400 miles long, the Arkansas River is one of the largest rivers in America. It took three million years of erosion to create the gorge, which offers breathtaking vistas and panoramic views. The Aerial Tram, 2200 feet in length, crosses over the gorge and provides a birds-eye view of the bridge and surrounding area. The park also has an incline railway that takes passengers down into the gorge at an incredibly steep 45-degree angle, making it the world’s steepest railway. The park has numerous shops, restaurants, picnic areas and a theatre that shows a 12-minute movie on the history of the bridge and its development.
One of the park’s newest attractions is the Nature Center, which has displays on the indigenous wildlife that live in southwest Colorado. The museum also showcases the diversity of the area’s geological formations and different types of rocks. The Nature Center hangs off the side of a cliff, making it one of the best spots in the park to take in the view.
The Royal Gorge Bridge and Park is one of the best values in Colorado. The price of admission includes access to all of the park’s attractions. Visitors should plan on spending around three hours to see and do everything in the park. |
